Case Studies

FEDIMA - The carbon footprint issue

Challenge

The pressure from retail on the food chain with respect to sustainability and carbon footprint is growing. There are many actors involved and it is expected that the European Commission will come out with legislative proposals in the near future.

PROFEL - The wild mushrooms issue

Challenge

EU processors of wild (=non-agaricus) mushrooms use semi-processed imports from many third country destinations. Since these mushrooms are not available in the EU, they have for many years been on a list of products with a duty suspension. In 2005/2006 the Commission learnt about a fraud case: Chinese agaricus mushrooms were labelled as a rare type of non-agaricus mushrooms (in order to escape the high duty that normally applies to agaricus mushrooms) and exported to Spain.

UNESDA - The health and wellness issue

Challenge

Back in 2005 non-alcoholic beverages were being strongly criticised as a contributor to growing levels of overweight and obesity. In particular, there was wide condemnation of the alleged effect on children of the advertising of soft drinks on TV and their availability in schools.
